Riveting Performer Whose Audiences Always Wish for One More Story
When storyteller Sara deBeer performs for Jewish audiences, she combines her vast experience as a teller of international folktales with her lifelong love of her own Jewish heritage. She breathes life into stories from both Eastern European and Sephardic traditions, holding listeners of all ages spellbound. Working with children, Sara draws on her experience as a classroom teacher in both public and private school settings, including two years as a “secular studies” teacher at New Haven’s Gan School. Sara offers holiday programs as well as programs of Jewish folktales. She is also a popular performer for family programs, including those designed to reach out to interfaith families. Sara’s programs for young adults and adults have enchanted audiences from confirmation classes to independent and assisted living residences. Her popular program, “Women of Wisdom, Women of Faith,” has been enthusiastically received by Sisterhood, Women’s League, and Hadassah gatherings. An experienced classroom teacher with degrees from Yale and Bank Street, Sara offers workshops for tellers at every level of experience. Participants develop new insights about storytelling, guided by Sara's expertise in both education and the arts. Sara has also offered numerous workshops for Jewish educators. She can suggest ways to integrate storytelling into on-going classroom activities or help religious school faculties develop curriculum.
General Background on Sara deBeer
In the summer of 1978, Sara deBeer was working for a library outreach program in Albany, NY, telling stories to kids in city parks and housing projects. By the summer of 1980, she’d received a fellowship from Yale to wander the west coast of Ireland and listen to traditional tellers. Now, an experienced teller for more than 35 years, she still eagerly tells stories to listeners young and old, and keeps her ears open for new tales.
